Conference: Water Scarcity in the West

A conference, Water Scarcity in the West: Past, Present, and Future, will be held April 6-7, 2015 at the University of California, Davis, Conference Center.

Human existence in the American West has always been challenged by water scarcity. Drought and climate change, coupled with inefficiencies in use and increasing demand, have exacerbated the issues facing water users today. How do scientific, political, and historical perspectives inform our understanding of water scarcity in the West? What is our role in adapting to water scarcity in a changing climate?

The conference will include an evening keynote by California Secretary for Natural Resources John Laird, contributed poster session, and exhibit by photographer Matt Black, followed by a day-long conference with presentations and panel discussions examining water scarcity in the West.

Registration: $10 before 31 March 2015.

5th Annual Mayor's Symposium: The Green-Blue City

The 5th Annual Mayor's Symposium: The Green-Blue City will be held on April 1, 2015 from Noon-4:30 at the Memorial House at Memory Grove in Salt Lake City. The 2015 Mayor's Symposium will focus on the natural systems of land and water that support and enhance the economy, ecology and quality of life in Salt Lake City. The natural and working lands, open space and parks, gardens and urban forests, waterways and aquifers, and rain gardens and stormwater detention systems that capture and cleanse storm water, are all part of a system of green and blue infrastructure. They provide flood protection and water storage, cleanse the air and water, regulate the urban climate, and provide food, recreation and access to nature for citizens. Although Green and Blue are part of the fabric of the community, these important threads are easily lost with growth. In the Wasatch region, there is a unique set of natural assets, and economic and cultural context. How can the concept of green-blue infrastructure to plan for a future that maintains the current high quality of life be applied? With The Green-Blue City, leading voices will be gathered from different perspectives to share their visions for green-blue infrastructure in the region.
